The New Google AdWords Keyword Suggestion Tool

Google has released an updated version of its keyword suggestion tool, this time within the AdWords interface and also way, way cooler.

To access the tool, look for the “Opportunities” tab in your Google AdWords account. From there, click on “Keyword Tool” underneath the “Tools” section, about halfway down the left side of the page. On the “Keyword Tool” page, look for “Check out the New Keyword Tool (beta),” and click. Voilà, you’re there.

The tool has several features that make it formidable:

  • Much more extensive set of data, including estimates on average CPC, CTR, ad position, clicks, and cost
  • The ability to include broad, exact, and phrase match variations of all keywords
  • Customizable columns, so you can view more or less data

The really cool stuff is found before you even generate reports. The new keyword suggestion tool has advanced options that allow you to update your estimates based on location, language, max CPC, daily budget, and mobile search.

You can also narrow down your keyword list based on category. For example, you can search for “gloves” and then choose the “Sporting Goods” category to target your results to only include keywords dealing with baseball gloves, boxing gloves, etc.

Once your research is done, you can choose specific keywords or the entire suggested list to either download for further review or, even better, you can simply have Google move them to a specific ad group in your existing AdWords campaign.

One other handy little feature you may have noticed in the image above: the new Google Keyword Suggestion Tool allows you to search for keywords by website … could be very helpful in researching new clients or, dare I say, competitors.

There are other little features and tweaks from the original Google Keyword Tool that make the new one more useful and targeted than before. Definitely worth a look.

Thanks for the Adwords tip. I like how you can drill down into categories. Great article.
